The popularity of tattoos in mainstream society has grown at a phenomenal rate over the last few decades. However as the demand for tattoos increases, so does the need for Tattoo Removal services. This may simply be to redesign, or more drastically to remove completely. Either way, finding a clinic that offers a safe, high quality and professional service is key. As laser technologies vary from place to place, it’s also important to know what system will deliver the most effective results.

That’s why we have decided to put together this guide to laser Tattoo Removal! A simple way of guiding you through our Fotona Tattoo Removal process and highlighting what we feel are the most important things to look out for when choosing your clinic.

Choosing your clinic

As is the case with all aesthetic procedures, finding a trustworthy and professional clinic with a highly qualified, highly skilled team of practitioners is essential. Although non-surgical laser treatments are not yet regulated by the UK Government, this will ensure the patient’s treatment is performed correctly, and safely and will achieve the best results possible.

At the Dr Tanja Phillips Medical Aesthetic Clinic, our practitioners have achieved a high level qualification in laser Tattoo Removal and are experts in this field.

Things to consider

Before going ahead with Tattoo Removal, patients may want to consider the following:

  • Reasons for removal
  • Extent of removal
  • Commitment to treatment course – Lifestyle/Financial

Understanding common technology and techniques

Tattoo removal is a complex treatment with various factors to consider before proceeding. Different coloured ink, the age of the tattoo and the type of tattoo, for example whether it is an amateur or professional tattoo, will affect the removal process and its results. A patient’s lifestyle, tolerance of the treatment and financial circumstances will also need careful consideration.

Laser therapy is the best way to have a tattoo removed and the technology involved plays a big role – Q switch laser tattoo removal is considered the most superior in this category. The Fotona laser has Q switch technology as well as a hybrid technology combining the high energy capabilities of nanosecond lasers with the ultrashort pulse peak powers of traditional picosecond lasers. It combines 4 complementary wavelengths to cover a broad range of applications and colour treatments. Many patients seek out a pure pico laser for tattoo removal, the Fotona Starwalker, gives the best of all these technologies with outstanding results.

The laser sends energy into the skin which penetrates past the top layer of skin and reaches the dermal layer, where the tattoo ink particles sit. The laser energy breaks the ink particles down into multiple smaller pieces so that they can naturally be excreted from the body.

The journey of tattoo removal can be a long process, but the best equipment and techniques will not only speed up the process significantly but make the journey a more pleasant and manageable experience.

Fotona Tattoo Removal Technology

Dr Tanja Phillips Medical Aesthetic Clinic offers the latest high powered laser Q-switch technology from Fotona, along with the hybrid technology described above to optimize results. Its innovative technology means deeper pigmented tattoos can be reached and removed, so patients have better results even in a single session. Its laser beam profile means increased safety as the energy is evenly distributed across the treated area. Skin damage is minimized and the risk of bleeding, tissue damage and textural changes in the skin are decreased. Once the ink particles in the skin have been broken down, the lymphatic system will get to work dispersing and removing the ink naturally.

But we have an added stage in our tattoo removal that makes it unique. An additional patented treatment stage (Fotona FracTATT) minimizes skin blistering and scarring significantly and speeds recovery. Local topical anesthetic can be applied prior to treatment but may not be necessary.

We have had great success using this particular laser technique and we are able to achieve the best possible results for our patients.

Expected results

Every patient and tattoo is different; Amateur tattoos are the easiest to remove whereas professional ones may require more treatment sessions. Therefore, the length of treatment course may vary but we would generally recommend between 4-8 treatment sessions at 6-8 week intervals to achieve maximum results.

Inflammation, small blood spots and some tenderness may be seen/felt over the treated area 1-2 days post treatment. The tattoo will slowly begin to fade between sessions, as the body’s immune system gets to work removing the ink particles. A thorough consultation and aftercare advice will be given at every session to ensure the treatment’s best possible outcome.

Here are some images of results one might expect at various stages of Tattoo removal treatment, please note the scar seen in the photos is from a BCG injection sat beneath the tattoo and unrelated to any treatment with Dr Tanja Phillips Medical Aesthetic Clinic, although the patient has in fact noticed some improvement in the scar as a beneficial side effect to the treatment.
